HISTORY OF NIE

More than 60 years ago, a handful of newspapers that were committed to the education and their community’s young people got together and brainstormed. It was their hope to train teachers to use the newspaper as a tool to teach the many facets of their state’s mandated educational frameworks and standards.

The newspaper in the classroom, as it was called then, was born. As the NIE program became successful and more newspapers became involved, the name changed to Newspapers in Education (NIE). When educators saw how economical and up-to-date these daily textbooks were, and how easily they fit into the teaching/learning role, NIE started to blossom.

Within the last two decades, NIE has boomed. More than 700 newspapers worldwide have successful NIE programs. Publishers, teachers and students find the whole concept of NIE rewarding, exciting and fun.

The News Tribune started our formal program in January 1998. In order to provide free newspapers to requesting teachers, sponsors were sought to underwrite the printing and distribution of newspapers for the classroom.

Through sponsorship support, more than 350,000 newspapers were provided free to participating teachers each school year, as well as the development of NIE brochures, NIE newsletters and the NIE website.
